Steam tracks lifetime playtime for every game on an account, plus a rolling two-week figure. Depending on where you look, you'll see different slices of that data — and if a profile's game details are private, most of it is hidden entirely. Here's every way to see hours, on your own account and anyone else's.
Check hours for a single game
In the Steam desktop app, open your Library in the list view: hours appear on each row's right side for anything played in the last two weeks. For a lifetime figure, click into the game and read the right-hand sidebar — it shows “X.X hrs on record” alongside achievements and last played.
The same number appears in the web client at steamcommunity.com and, roughly, on the mobile app's library page. If a game shows no hours at all, you either never launched it or its playtime predates Steam's tracking (rare, but true for a handful of very old titles).
Check hours on another person's profile
Open any profile at steamcommunity.com and look at the Games tab (or the “Currently playing” box). You'll see total playtime for their most-played titles — but only if the owner set Game details to Public in their privacy settings. On private profiles you get nothing: no hours, no library, no recent activity.
Total hours across an entire library
Steam never shows an account-wide total anywhere in its UI. To get one, you need the Web API: it returns `playtime_forever` for every owned game, which you can sum. Why numbers sometimes disagree
- Two-week vs lifetime: the library list shows the rolling 14-day figure, the game page shows forever. They answer different questions.
- Free weekends and trials count toward playtime too, not just owned copies.
- Idling and AFK time count as well — open menus count. Tools that idle games inflate hours without gameplay.
- Rounding: Steam rounds display values, so a game showing “0.1 hrs” can actually carry several minutes of tracked time.
Frequently asked questions
Can friends see my hours if my profile is private?
No. Game details privacy controls playtime, your game list and your achievement showcases together. Setting it to Private hides all of them.
Does Steam track hours in offline mode?
Yes. Playtime accrues locally and syncs to Steam's servers the next time you connect.
Can I reset or delete my playtime?
No. Lifetime playtime is permanent on your account. You can hide it from others via privacy settings, but you can't zero it out.
Is there a limit to recorded hours?
No practical one. Accounts with tens of thousands of hours across their libraries display fine.
