How to Level Up on Steam

XP sources, card-set math, and where the cheap XP hides.

Steam levels climb on XP, and XP comes overwhelmingly from crafting badges. Each normal badge grants 100 XP; requirements grow every 10 levels. Knowing where the efficient XP lives turns a slow crawl into a plan.

Trading cards: the bread-and-butter XP

Playing a card-dropping game earns you roughly half of that game's possible card drops; the rest historically required spending in-game. Collect a full set and Steam crafts it into a badge worth 100 XP (foil sets grant an additional 100 XP for the foil badge). Most sets cost anywhere from well under a dollar to several dollars on the Community Market depending on the game's popularity and card supply.

Bulk buyers typically shop for complete sets from market resellers rather than gathering individual cards — the arithmetic favors it whenever a game's cards trade below face value.

Sale and event badges: the budget XP

  • Seasonal sale badges (summer, winter, etc.) usually include a point-store or quest component granting hundreds of XP for trivial tasks.
  • Event badges tied to festivals, launches or Steam awards periodically hand out free or near-free XP.
  • The Years of Service badge ticks upward automatically every year you've had the account — slow, but effortless.

The math at higher levels

Leveling from N to N+1 costs 100 × (⌊N ÷ 10⌋ + 1) XP, so levels 1–10 need 100 XP each, 11–20 need 200, 21–30 need 300, and climbing from level 99 to 100 alone costs 1,000 XP — ten badge sets for a single step. Working out total sets for a distant target by hand is tedious; the level calculator does it for any starting level and goal.

A realistic fast path

  • Buy cheap complete sets (often older or low-population games) for baseline XP.
  • Time pushes to seasonal sales and clear the event badge tasks.
  • Craft foils only when a set is unusually cheap — the second 100 XP is real but rarely economical on popular games.
  • Track progress with the calculator so milestone jumps don't surprise you.

Frequently asked questions

What's the cheapest XP per dollar on Steam?

Consistently, seasonal-event badges during sales, followed by complete card sets for obscure games. Popular-game foils sit at the expensive end.

Do I need to play games to level up?

No — cards can be bought outright on the market and badges crafted without ever launching the game. Playing just earns you starter drops for free.

Can idling games earn cards faster?

Card drops are tied to playtime, so keeping games running does accumulate drops — tools like FreeSteamIdler automate exactly that. Drops per game are capped, so it speeds collection but doesn't remove the cap.
